CHIP SLOAN: There is always a reason that a truck accident happens. It's usually not simple negligence on the part of the driver. It may be his driving record, it may be his medical condition, it may be that he's tired because he's driving too many hours. There's always more than just someone not paying attention.
I do think it's important if you've lost a loved one or if you've been seriously injured in a trucking accident to hire a firm that has done trucking cases before. Every trucking case is different. But when you've done as many as we have, we're prepared for them.
I feel a great deal of compassion for anyone who's been through a trucking accident. I've represented families and people who have been injured by trucking accidents, and one thing I try to make sure of is that I treat them the way I'd want to be treated if I were in that room.
I'm on the national advisory board of the Association of Interstate Trucking Lawyers of America. The reason I agree to be on the national advisory board of AITLA was because I have been through so many trucking cases with so many families. And it's not all about litigating trucking cases. I wanted to be able to give back in terms of teaching other lawyers how to do these cases and hopefully how to prevent so many from getting hurt in the future and to make our highways safer.
